Chapter Eight

#xa0;

The music to Rolling in the Deep by Adele woke her from the slumber that had cocooned her. Fighting a yawn, Anabelle Lee reached for the phone by her bed.

“Yes?”

Whether or not the word had come out like a word, or if it was more like a growl, she wasn’t sure. And quite frankly, she didn’t give a damn. She’d overindulged last night and her head pounded like the percussion section of a marching band.

“Anabelle Lee?”

The voice was small and frightened, all the while sending fissures of awareness down her spine, wiping away the lingering effects of her drinking. Only one person she knew had that voice, always cowed, always frightened.

Carlos’ sister, Lewa.

“Lewa?” She sat up and shoved her hair away from her face. It fell back right away and she raked it to the side once more.

“I know I’m the last person you want to hear from but”—her voice dropped more—”I’m in trouble and need help.”

“It was your brother I had issues with.” And killed. “Not you. What do you need?”

“I think they’re going to kill me.”

“Who? Who do you think is going to kill you?”

“The same people who killed Carlos. They’re after me.”

Anabelle Lee got up from her bed and made her way to the office. “I can assure you that the one who did that to Carlos isn’t after you, Lewa. But what people are you talking about? Do you have names?”

She plugged her phone in and began recording the conversation on the off chance she missed something she would have a copy to go over later.

“Lewa? Are you still there?”

She sent a text to her brother to have him trace the call on her phone then put it back to her ear. “Lewa?”

“I’m here. I had to wait for them to leave.”

“Who? Who’s with you?”

“I told you, the ones who killed Carlos.”

She put in her handsfree device and ran back to her room to change out of her sleeping attire. “Where are you, Lewa?”

“Last place I recognized was Huétor de Santillán. I’m sorry, I didn’t know anyone else to call.” There wasn’t any way to disguise the tears and fear in her words.

“Don’t apologize. I’m on my way to you, Lewa. Listen to me, this is the most important thing I can tell you. Do what you have to in order to stay alive.”

Typing fast, she put in the name Lewa had given her and pulled it up. It was a small town in the Sistemas Beticos.

“Tell me what you can, Lewa.”

“They came in the middle of the night and took me. We drove a long time, I stole this phone from someone at a petrol station. I’m going to have to go, though, they don’t give me much time alone.”

“Okay, how many are there?”

She pulled a black Aerosmith T-shirt on over her head, readjusted her earpiece then yanked up a pair of cargo pants. Opening her closet once more, she then dragged out her olive-green canvas to-go bag.

“I’ve only seen two.”

“And they told you they killed Carlos?”

She sniffed.
